Scuba Instructor Course - IDC Preparation
Prior to beginning your Bali IDC, you want to ensure that you are adequately prepared and there are no surprises. Whilst we do conduct the PADI IDC preparation course it is best that you come prepared for the scuba instructor course.
Instructor Course - Prerequisites
There are a number of prerequisites that must be met, prior to any participation in a PADI IDC:
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must submit a medical statement verifying that you are fit for diving and signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
- Submit proof of CPR training within the last 24 months. The PADI EFR course fulfills this requirement.
- You should be a renewed PADI Divemaster or PADI Assistant Instructor, or a current Instructor affiliated with another certification agency.
- Prior to starting the IDC, you must have been a certified diver for a minimum of 6 months and logged at least 60 dives.
- Prior to attending the IE, you must have been a certified diver for a minimum of 6 months and logged at least 100 dives.
- You are required to provide photocopies of all previous diving certifications along with photocopies of your last five log pages.
- Prior to taking the PADI Enriched Air Instructor Course you must be certified as an enriched air diver.
You will also need to ensure that you have all the necessary materials for the IDC.
Scuba Instructor - Preparation
First of all, familiarize yourself with the Instructor Manual. This is now downloadable from the padi pros web site so make sure you have downloaded this. you should also receive the new PADI Instructor manual paper version with your PADI Divemaster Course. This is one of the most important things that you can do as this is your tool with which to teach. Look at the latest issues of The Undersea Journal & Training Bulletins to make sure you are up to date with any recent changes in standards. These are also downloadable from the padi pros web site.
Practice your dive theory (physics, physiology, the RDP, skills & environment and equipment). The best way is to work through the new Encyclopedia of Recreational diving and the workbook, before moving onto the PADI Divemaster exams that come with your IDC Crew pak..
Your aim should be to know every right answer, and also you should know why every wrong answer is wrong!
You can now also start to look at you PADI Guide to Teaching. This is a useful tool to review before the IDC as it has useful tips on how to conduct skills, amongst other things.
Scuba Instructor Course - Get Wet!
Go diving to make sure that you are comfortable in the water. Quite often PADI Instructor candidates will not have dived for some time so it good to make sure that you are familiar with your scuba equipment.
Try and help on as many PADI courses as possible, prior to the IDC. If you are in Bali before the start of the course then come and see us and we can get you assisting our PADI Instructors and working our our PADI courses..
Practice your diving skills - you especially need to focus on the 20 skills from the PADI Divemaster Skill evaluation slate. Make sure that you can perform all of these skills comfortably with demonstration quality. Buoyancy skills, CESA, and mask skills tend to be prime skills that the examiners like to test so make sure that you have these skills honed.
You can also practice your rescue skills - most important is the rescue exercise number seven, unconscious diver at the surface. During the IDC and IE, you will be required to perform this rescue exercise in a role model fashion so try to practice this.
Now take time to relax. The IDC is not something to fear. You will look back on it as one of the most rewarding courses you will have done.
