The Hardest PADI Divemaster Demonstration Skills

Diving is invigorating to both the body and mind and while every minute spent underwater is a great learning experience, it is important to master good diving skills for the sake of your safety and that of other divers. In addition to the number of leadership skills, techniques and information that you have to learn and understand, there is also the occasional fear and anxiety that you have to overcome. One of the best ways to do this is to prepare yourself mentally and understand that a Divemaster, you should not only be able to execute crucial dive skills, but also be able to demonstrate them as well.

To be able to pass your PADI Divemaster course here in Bali, you will need to demonstrate all pertinent skills needed when underwater while other Bali PADI Divemasters act as students. To help you prepare, we’ve put together the hardest PADI Divemaster Demonstration Skills which you will have to demonstrate with ease during your Bali Divemaster exam:

 BCD Removal And Replacement Underwater

The whole purpose of this demonstration is to showcase your skills to the other PADI Divemasters who are acting as students. So be sure to demonstrate your skills slowly. Start by facing your students and loosening your straps. Place the tank firmly on the ground and hold it in place with your right hand.  To replace, kneel on your left leg and use your left hand to grab the tank and bring it around. Turn slowly (changing to kneel on the right leg) and show your right side to demonstrate that you are putting your right arm through the hole.

Weight Belt Removal And Replacement Underwater

During demonstrations, it is better to be slightly more overweight but upon removing your weight belt, you’ll start floating around a little which could affect your demonstration to the other PADI Divemasters. The trick to avoiding this is to use more weights in your buoyancy control device (BCD) and not on your belt; this makes it easier to use your belt for demonstrations without you floating around. Make sure you demonstrate how not to hold the belt away from your body. You can later replace your belt easily thanks to the BCD that is weighing you down.

Mask Skills

In this skill you will demonstrate first to the students your mask skills and after that you will act as assistant instructor who conduct and supervise the students while they perform their skills. For demonstrations, leave your mask off as much as possible to show your students that it is possible to breathe even without a mask. Grab the BCD waist band of your students with your left hand when mask is involved, leaving your right hand free to access dump valves in case your students panic.

Regulator Recovery

This exercise can make your students nervous. Take your time to adjust everything and show the little bubbles as you breathe out. The idea is to make students relax and do everything right. Make sure you sit properly to show what you are doing and hold on to their waist band or shoulder to hold them down if they panic.

Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA)

Demonstrate this over a short distance in clear view of your students. Make sure you take as much time as possible and perform a slow demonstration for their better understanding.

Take your time giving instructions and during demonstrations for students to grasp these hard skills. Make your pre-diving brief short to avoid information overload and always encourage questions. As a Divemaster candidate you have to learn how to demonstrate skills properly; when you complete the PADI Divemaster Course, you should be able to assist the instructor teaching the scuba diving course. There will be times when the Dive Instructor will ask you to demonstrate your skills to new students.
