5 Steps to Make an Underwater Video go Viral!

Want to learn how to make viral underwater videos? Well hopefully this simple guide will help you along. As you may already know, social media engagement is a critical element that must not be overlooked in order to be successful in today’s market. The ever increasing use of smart phones and tablets have changed the way this element works considerably in the last 5 years. During the day while people are on the go or at work they spend time scrolling through posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. during break times and any other opportunity to sneak a peek at their phones. The very nature of how these platforms work affects the content you should display.

  1. Try and film strange behavior, yawning, eating, mating, dying, underwater life is compulsive viewing for divers, always wanting to see something new.
  2. Try and go for the cute factor, this will potentially attract non divers to take up diving and spread your video further. ie. Turtles, Nudibranches, Gobies, Mandarinfish.
  3. Keep your videos under 1 minute, preferably under 30 seconds. Because smart phones use the scrolling action and people are often using them when they have a spare 5 mins of free time. Anything over 1 minute you may find your viewers lose interest sooner, unless it’s incredible never seen before footage.
  4. Post to various Facebook, Twitter and Instagram groups within the same industry and other animal lovers groups, this diversifies your audience and gives it more chance to go viral. Always watermark your footage with your dive center or personal name to get recognition, use personal tags, use hashtags and ask viewers to like and share.
  5. Music is not needed and wastes time on your edit and you risk having it taken down due to copyright issues, without music it helps your video to feel more realistic and achievable to the average diver/viewer.
